Effective instructional design is crucial! It takes research, time and maximum effort. Below is a list of 6 best practices and strategies in Instructional Design that I have compiled.

Establish clear objectives
This is always the first step in developing an effective training course. You should clearly identify what you want learners to achieve at the end of the course. Learners tend to be more engaged when they know what is expected of them.
Keep it simple
There is nothing more antagonizing than trying to maneuver a website or program that isn't user friendly. Design courses, programs, websites etc that are easy for learners to navigate. Designing courses that are difficult to navigate can lead to a lack of interest from users and prevent them from completing the course. Furthermore, do try to keep courses as short as possible without losing the quality of the content, to avoid losing the learner's attention.
Consider making the content of your courses and programs as engaging as possible. Use relevant graphics, videos, infographics, interactive quizzes, role play and quality audio. However, courses should still be challenging to avoid losing the learner's interest and to help them retain the information.
Feedback
Provide feedback to learners as soon as possible. Learners will only continue to grow when they are provided with feedback. They should be provided with the when, whys and how.
Feedback isn't limited to the learner, do accept constructive criticism in the form of surveys etc. to help you develop better content.
Stay informed
The world of technology is ever revolving and you should adapt to those changes. Stay informed about the newest strategies, technologies and practices in Instructional Design. Read various blogs, newsletters and articles to expand your knowledge. Knowledge is power! Here's a link to a very informative podcast on trends in instructional design and technology.
Familiarize yourself with intellectual property laws and copyright practices. Failing to adhere to copyright laws can tarnish your reputation as an Instructional Designer. Below is a link to a copy of a guide that I created as part of the requirements for completing my masters degree.
